Happy birthday to our Wikiworld!
Happy birthday, wikipedia! At the age of 10 years you have shown us that sharing works, making the best quality of knowledge available for all people – for free. Good knowledge shouldn’t have limitations, and wikipedia has proved that money does not need to be the essential factor. Quality, availability and idealism has been three of the keys to success for wikipedia.
Today, many of the article authors contributing to wikipedia are among the highest ranked experts in their topics. More than 100 000 contributors make more than 5 article edits monthly. This is the both for the articles in English, but also to larger and larger degree for articles in other languages including Norwegian.
“Lots of people edit because they want to make the world a better place and they believe that access to information is a human right.”
– Sue Gardner, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation
More than 26 000 000 articles in 250 languages and 400 000 000 monthly article entries are also impressing facts.
Several other wiki’s have been released WikiNews, WikiAnswers, Wikibooks and International Music Score Library Project. For researchers, there is also a new kid on the block that is worthy to check out, ideabasket.
Why not let the ubuntu spirit inspire you and contribute to wikipedia and other similar creative commons initiatives?
