World AIDS day the 1st of December: Time to take control over HIV

1st of December is the world AIDS day and could be a good opportunity to reflect where we are in terms of tackling HIV and how to better continue in the work to take control over HIV.

Even though around 34 million are living with HIV, the world has progressed substantially since AIDS was first described in 1981 – 30 years ago. We now have the knowledge and tools needed to diagnose HIV accurately, we have some tools to prevent HIV and we have gradually better tools to treat the infection. Still, the number of people not diagnosed, without access to appropriate prevention and without access to good treatment is still much too large.

Thus, we still need to put together even more knowledge, even more resources, and even more energy into tackling one of the major barriers to development – particularly in Southern and Eastern Africa.
