Gratulerer til Palestina med etterlengtet annerkjennelse
Folket i Palestina har gjennom lang tid lidd tungt. Nå har Palestina søkt om anerkjennelse som stat med observatørstatus i FN. Med støtte for dette fra 138 mot 9 medlemsland er det en historisk dag for det palestinske folk som nå vil ha større muligheter til å kunne få diplomatisk hjelp for å hindre undertrykking, eller som Palestina’s president Mahmoud Abbas sa, “Your support will send a promising message to millions of Palestinians… that justice is possible, and that there is a reason to be hopeful, and that the peoples of the world do not accept the occupation. Your support for our endeavor today will give a reason to hope.”

Helsebonus og økt engasjement når barn kommer ut i naturen
I en tankevekkende artikkel i The Guardian og i rapporten Natural Childhood vises det hvordan barn i Storbritannia bruker stadig mindre tid i naturen. Britiske barn mellom 11 og 15 år bruker omtrent halvparten av tiden de er våkne foran en skjerm. Av dette utgjør passiv tid foran fjernsyn i gjennomsnitt 17 timer i uken. I 1971 gikk 80% av barna til skolen til fots, mens andelen idag ligger på kun 10%.

Det er lite som tyder på at dette er et sær-britisk problem. Norge kommer riktignok ut noe bedre ut enn flere andre europeiske land, men mange av tendensene er de samme. Norske barn ser gjennomsnittlig fjernsyn ca 12 timer per uke og sitter stille rundt halvparten av tiden de er våkne.

Den “moderne” livsstilen har sine bivirkninger. Lite aktivitet bidrar at andelen overvektige barn øker raskt og en stor andel barn har psykiske lidelser. Behandlingen trenger ikke være så vanskelig. Å bidra til at barn leker mer ut i naturen kan bidra til å forebygge flere av disse helseproblemen, og bidrar samtidig til å vekke engasjement og forståelse av viktigheten av naturen vi har rundt oss.

I tillegg ser det ut som mye tid i naturen bidrar til å bedre kognitiv utvikling og emosjonell intelligens. Det ser også ut til at de som er mye ute i naturen generelt også har bedre trivsel. Hvorfor ikke ta barna mer med ut og la fjernsynsskjermen få en velfortjent pause?
Tid for å gjøre opp for syndene
Olje anses av mange som synonymt med velstand. Dette er i svært mange områder langt fra sannheten. Nigeria er et av eksempel på et område som lider hardt under oljeproduksjons følger. Enorme områder er ødelagte av en katastrofe som er mange ganger større enn den beryktede Exxon Valdez. Dessverre er det de fattige som må betale kostnaden. Nå har Nigeria fått nok og går til erstatningssak mot Shell som er en av selskapene som har bidratt til mest av skadevirkningene. Nigeria kommer til å møte motstand i sin kamp for å få ryddet opp igjen særlig fra rike og mektige oljeselskaper. Dagens oppfordring for deg som har medfølelse for et ødelagt Nigerdelta og ønsker å bidra til at det kan ryddes opp igjen er å signere på støttekampanjen fra Avaaz.
Det er også verdt å nevne at Statens pensjonsfond har store investeringer i Shell – som i 2011 utgjorde over 20 milliarder kroner norske statlige investeringer i selskapet. Det er derfor på tide at Statens pensjonsfond trekkes ut fra slike investeringer. Hvorfor ikke gjøre slik Miljøpartiet De Grønne foreslår, nemlig å gjøre om oljefondet til et framtidsfond.

In days, Nigeria’s Parliament could approve a $5 billion fine against giant oil polluter Shell for a spill that devastated the lives of millions of people, and pass a law to hold all oil companies to account for polluting and plundering. This is a watershed moment, but unless we all speak out, oil giants will crush it.
Finally, Big Oil is having to pay for the wasteland and violence that they’ve created. President Jonathan supports the Shell fine, and progressive Senators are pushing for strong regulations, but oil companies are slick, and without huge international support MPs could buckle under the pressure.

Experts say that every year Big Oil spills as much crude into the Niger Delta as an Exxon Valdez, but as it is Africa, it gets little media play. After a leak occurred at Shell’s Bonga oil facility last December, millions of gallons poured into the ocean and washed up on the densely populated coast — resulting in one of the largest African oil spills ever. The fine and bill on the table are a once in a lifetime chance to stand up to Big Oil.
Oil companies have made $600 billion in the last 50 years in Nigeria, but locals don’t see the benefits. Their land, drinking water and fishing grounds are ruined. And Shell has spent hundreds of millions of dollars a year on security forces,repressing protest against its harmful practices.
The oil industry is crucial to the economy, but companies have never been held to account for the devastation of drilling. Now, the Nigerian President and a few brave MPs are speaking out and they could finally slam the oil giants with tough fines and give fair pay outs to the victims.
