På Bergen internasjonale film festival vises nå filmen The Revolution. Dette er en film der Rob Stewart viser oss fascinerende og vakre deler av naturen vi sjelden får muligheten til å se – som f.eks. “flamboyant cuttlefish”. Han viser oss også at en del av dette vil vi neppe se igjen dersom vi ikke løser klimautfordringene. Stewart tar oss med på en reise med mål om å løse utfordringene.

Tid for å gjøre opp for syndene

Olje anses av mange som synonymt med velstand. Dette er i svært mange områder langt fra sannheten. Nigeria er et av eksempel på et område som lider hardt under oljeproduksjons følger. Enorme områder er ødelagte av en katastrofe som er mange ganger større enn den beryktede Exxon Valdez. Dessverre er det de fattige som må betale kostnaden. Nå har Nigeria fått nok og går til erstatningssak mot Shell som er en av selskapene som har bidratt til mest av skadevirkningene. Nigeria kommer til å møte motstand i sin kamp for å få ryddet opp igjen særlig fra rike og mektige oljeselskaper. Dagens oppfordring for deg som har medfølelse for et ødelagt Nigerdelta og ønsker å bidra til at det kan ryddes opp igjen er å signere på støttekampanjen fra Avaaz.

Det er også verdt å nevne at Statens pensjonsfond har store investeringer i Shell – som i 2011 utgjorde over 20 milliarder kroner norske statlige investeringer i selskapet. Det er derfor på tide at Statens pensjonsfond trekkes ut fra slike investeringer.  Hvorfor ikke gjøre slik Miljøpartiet De Grønne foreslår, nemlig å gjøre om oljefondet til et framtidsfond.

Experts say that every year Big Oil spills as much crude into the Niger Delta as an Exxon Valdez, but as it is Africa, it gets little media play. After a leak occurred at Shell’s Bonga oil facility last December, millions of gallons poured into the ocean and washed up on the densely populated coast — resulting in one of the largest African oil spills ever. The fine and bill on the table are a once in a lifetime chance to stand up to Big Oil.

In days, a multi-billion dollar Swiss pharma company may get the Indian Supreme Court to shut down our supply of affordable medicines. Only we can stop this outrage.

Novartis is suing our government so it can squeeze more profits from the sick and needy. If Novartis wins, it will threaten Indian companies’ ability to produce low-cost medicines for malaria, AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening diseases, depriving millions around the world of the treatments they desperately need and threatening thousands of Indian jobs. But people power can push Novartis to drop the suit before the final ruling.

One man is masterminding this stealthy attack on the health of millions — Ranjit Shahani, who heads Novartis India and India’s massively powerful pharmaceutical lobby group. Tid for mer anstendighet i ernæringsdebatten

Carl-Fredrik Bassøe går til personangrep på Kaare Norum i sitt forsøk på å sverte innlegget Lavkarbo er uanstendig. Les innlegg på aftenposten.no fra Kaisa R. Hautala, Lars Thore Fadnes, Siri Martinsen om hvorfor innlegget til Norum er betydelig mer i tråd med vitenskap enn personangrepet som Bassøe framfører:

Hva med litt mer anstendighet i debatten om lavkarbo?

Carl-Fredrik Bassøe går til personangrep på Kaare Norum i sitt forsøk på å sverte innlegget Lavkarbo er uanstendig. Det er flott at Bassøe har kunnskap om stoffskiftesykdommer og forteller litt om dette. Når det kommer til klima, ernæring og aspekter for matvaresituasjonen etterlyser vi allikevel at han forteller hvor han henter sine synspunkter fra. Flere av synspunktene til Bassøe er det nemlig ikke lett å finne i kilder som støttes i vitenskapelig litteratur.

Lavkarbo er hverken dyrt, forurensende eller klimafiendtlig, mener overlege Carl-Fredrik Bassøe. Landbruks- og klimaforskning er tydelig på at klimaavtrykkene fra et kosthold med mye kjøtt og melkeprodukter er mange ganger høyere enn det et kosthold basert på grønnsaker er. Dette sammenfattes godt i en omfattende rapport fra FNs mat- og landbruksorganisasjon (FAO) med navnet «Livestock’s long shadow». Denne rapporten som tydelig belyser aspekter rundt klima og verdens matvaresituasjonen og viser at kjøtt- og meieriproduksjonen ikke bare er ansvarlige for betydelige klimaavtrykk, men også at slike produkter bidrar til økt press på en prekær matvaresituasjon for mange av verdens fattige. I dag brukes ca. 70 prosent av alle jordbruksarealer til oppdrett av husdyr samtidig som dette bidrar med kun 17 prosent av den gjennomsnittlige energien fra kostholdet på verdensbasis.

Dersom alle skulle ha et kjøttforbruk på høyde med det vi har i Norge, ville det med andre ord ikke vært mat nok til en stor andel av verdens befolkning. Med et grønnsaksdominert kosthold derimot, vil det være mulig å mette langt flere enn verdens befolkning. Derfor har flere av FNs organer tatt til ordet for at vi bør redusere kjøttkonsumet. I samme uke som Mattilsynet lanserer en svært kritisk rapport om dyrevelferd i kyllingproduksjonen, skal vi heller ikke glemme den vesentlige negative effekten for dyrs velferd som et stort kjøttforbruk har. Det kan nevnes at det er mulig å praktisere et lavkarbokosthold basert på nøtter, kjerner og oljer med lite eller ingen kjøtt- og melkeprodukter. De fleste har allikevel fått med seg at mange av dem som fronter lavkarbo i den offentlige debatten også anbefaler et betydelig inntak av kjøtt og melkeprodukter som ost.

Kaare Norum har også helt rett i at et lavkarbokosthold med mye kjøtt innebærer tallrike helsetrusler – inkludert en betydelig økt risiko for flere kreftsykdommer, hjerte- og karsykdom – noe store oversiktsartikler i de beste tidsskrifter har vist. Vi kan heller ikke se at Norum har anbefalt cola og kaker. Innlegget til Norum er derfor betydelig mer i tråd med vitenskap enn personangrepet som Bassøe framfører.

The world has changed: It is time to update old knowledge

The world is not static and during the history there has been a continuous change in situations including wealth and challenges in different parts of the world. The last decades are not exceptions, something which is clearly illustrated in the rich dataset which is freely available at http://www.gapminder.org/

In gapminder, you can see how factors such as income per person, life expectancy, child mortality, educational achievements, CO2 emissions and morbidity from different diseases has changed during the last two centuries, just to mention a few of the available factors. Hans Rosling, the founder behind gapminder explains some of the data himself in the video linked here. The conclusion is stunning.

The world is substantially different from how it was only a few decades ago. Not only that. It is substantially different from how it is often presented. Presenting the world as is often done into either “developed” or “industrialised” and “undeveloped” or “developing” is not only misleading, it does not make much sense any more. The picture has changed considerably, and is now much closer to a continuous spread from high-income countries with low numbers of child mortality, low morbidity burdens and in general present social security systems, to the other end of the spectrum where low-income countries stand with high proportions of children dying in early age, high morbidity burdens and insufficient social security systems. However, most populations and countries now fall in between these two. They live in middle-income settings. See Hans Rosling debunk some of the myths about the world and explaining why we need to change our terminology and way of referring to the world in this video on TED talk. Hans Rosling has also just published a well-written comment in Swedish in one of the Swedish newspapers for those who read Swedish.

So, why not update our way of thinking of the world to understand the current world situation.

Corruption: the mirror of poverty

Corruption is nourished by inequity and poverty, and nourishes even more poverty and inequity.

Fortunately, there are several strategies that can be used to fight corruption such as:

– Empowering the poorest and striving for econonomic equity
– Putting institutions in places where corruption can be reported
– Optimise transparency and accountability
– Having a legal system that punishes companies and people who are involved in corruption
– Putting the corruption on the agenda

The need for transparance is also present for aid, both to make the receivers able to make good priorities and to assist in providing as much equity as possible. This can be done through institutions such as Publish What You Pay (http://www.publishwhatyoufund.org/) or the Open Knowledge Foundation.

It is now time to get free from one of the greatest obstacles to development out of poverty and dispair. Why not start to clean up among national companies with an unethical record?

Korrupsjon: fattigdommens speil

Korrupsjonen får næring fra fattigdom og ulikhet, og bidrar til mer fattigdom og større ulikhet. Den lager med andre ord en ond sirkel…

– Bedre fordelingen av goder globalt og gi like rettigheter
– Få på plass institusjoner der korrupsjon kan innrapporteres
– Optimalisere gjennomsiktighet og oversiktlighet i regnskapsføring
– Ha et lovsystem som straffer de som er involvert i korrupsjon
– Få korrupsjon på agendaen

Last ned en kortfattet rapport om hvordan korrupsjonssituasjonen er i verden.

Behovet for oversiktlighet er også tilsvarende stort for bistand, både for å gjøre mottakerlandene i stand til å foreta gode prioriteringer, og for å kunne bidra til størst mulig likhet.
